This summer the Seattle area celebrates the centennial of Seattle's first World's Fair. Held in 1909, the World’s Fair brought 4 million visitors to Seattle and is historically referred to as the event that put Seattle on the map. Mercer Island is one of several organizations regionally who is helping celebrate this significant, historical event.
Special Opening Festivities: Sunday, August 16, 1 to 4 pm
Free to the public, this event at the Community Center at Mercer View will host programs to celebration the AYP Centennial. The event will include a performance of “Salmon People” Digest by resident Peter Donaldson, a Native American storytelling performance by Paul Wagner and an Inuksuk building activity for kids. In addition, Odin Lonning, aTlingit artist, in traditional regalia, will be performing. For more information visit: odinlonning.com
Gallery Show Dates: August 3 through September 11
The gallery show will feature authentic Native Alaskan hand carved totem poles and masks, historic photos, arts and crafts, trade beads, ivory, and other displays, including Mercer Island history. More information: 206.275.7609.
