Natalie Marr, Mercer Island HS student and Girl Scout won the Red Cross’s National Hero Award for Service in Action for Emergency Preparedness.
Natalie was recognized at the 2010 Red Cross Hero Awards Breakfast at the Seattle Convention Center on March 11 for her great job in getting Mercer Island Kids prepared as well as putting a preparedness kit drive together for those families in the Seattle area that cannot afford to make their own emergency preparedness kits.
The American Red Cross stated in their program:
"Two years ago, major wind storms hit the Seattle area. During that time Natalie Marr and her family were left with no electricity for eight days and little heat in their home on Mercer Island. Her experience surviving severe winter storms motivated Natalie to prepare her peers in the Mercer Island School District for disaster. "I thought who else isn't prepared for a disaster? How can I get my neighbors prepared? "said Natalie.
Natalie, a senior, decided to make preparedness her focus while earning her Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award. "I want this project to get everyone excited about being prepared. You never know what's going to happen," Natalie said.

Natalie taking on the task of reaching out to teens with a message of preparedness will hopefully spur on not only teens but their parents as well - the more voices reminding people to prepare the better chance we have of surviving a catastrophic event.
Great Job Natalie!
